For months, the 35th anniversary Super Sentai series premiering next year has been rumored to be a pirate show, and thanks to scans hitting the net, we know it’s true. Sentai finally sets sail to One Piece with Kaizoku Sentai Goukaiger.
Henshin Justice Unlimited has a translation of the image text, but all you really need to know is that the rangers are in pirate outfits and can turn into rangers from previous series (ala Kamen Rider Decade). I think that’s a tad excessive. If you’re going to go that far down the anniversary route, why not just make a season about AkaRed and give him a full team? I’d watch the heck out off that.
I’m still undecided on the suits. I’m not sure about using the skull and crossbones, although it doesn’t seem to be quite the same logo (swords instead of crossbones and I’m not quite sure if that’s a skull or not). Speaking of which, the sword does look cool, and the gun/sword combo could lead to some neat fights. The helmet is thankfully going back to a simpler design (no mouth) and does a good job mixing in the pirate hat. And of course, if preppy kids have taught us anything, it’s that popped collars are ALWAYS cool.
I think the suits will look neat in action, and I’m looking forward to the February 13 premier. Here’s hoping Goukaiger will be at least halfway entertaining, unlike last year’s let down with boring Goseiger.
