I grew tired of fireworks long ago. Year after year of sitting back and watching the same burst of colors explode in a slightly different arrangement grew old after a while. Even reaching the age where I could light them myself only helped minimally. I still enjoy the family and friend time I have on the fourth and other similar holidays, but fighting the bugs and the darkness for the same thing every year gets boring.
However, driving back from the family fireworks event this year lead to a slightly different experience. Fireworks launched almost in unison throughout the horizon. Every turn and curve along the highway put me facing even more spectacular explosions than before. Seeing an entire city celebrating today the same way, spreading across various parts of the town with different peoples, was quite inspiring. Especially in a metropolitan county where fireworks are illegal.
I may still not get excited about the usual gathering around the launching ground to shoot off more bottle rockets or artillery shells, but seeing other people across the city light up like that more than makes up for it.
It’s always good to have another reason to be joyous and merry. For some, it’s celebrating 235 years of our country. For others, it’s taking time our of busy lives to be with our family and friends. For even more, it’s being one of the few nights where being a pyromaniac is perfectly acceptable.
So happy 4th of July, everyone!
(And don’t forget to see Captain America: The First Avenger, coming Friday July, 22)
